  • how to care for your candle

Sandwick Bay candles is a small business that puts great care into making your candles. We pay attention to every detail and spend hours testing each product before we send them out to you. All our candle use premium fragrance oils, cotton wicks and most of all soy wax. You can read more about why we use soy wax on our blog post here. Some things you need to know to get the most out of your candle

    First Burn

This is the most important tip for the the first time you burn your Sandwick Bay candle. When you light a new candle allow the wax to melt across the surface of the candle so that the wax has melted to the edge of the sides of the tin or jar. This may take a couple of hours depending on the size of the container. But if you do this on the first burn you will prevent tunnelling and allow for a more even burn the next time you light it. Soy wax has a memory so this first burn sets the memory for the rest of the 'life of the candle'.

What length should I keep my wick?

Before lighting your candle each time you should trim the wick to 1/4 inch or approx 5mm. This will keep your candle from smoking and producing a large flame, which may lead to soot around the glass jar. ALWAYS remove the trimmed wick from the candle to prevent it from catching fire.

    Candles like the dark

Always store your candles in a cool, dry and dark place. Storing in direct sunlight may cause them to discolour and even sweat. All our candles are naturally coloured just with the fragrances but those with vanilla may discolour quicker. You will also notice the blood orange candle has a slight orange shade due to the orange fragrance oil.

    Trim you wicks!

I'm telling you this again because it is so important! Trim your wicks. This is a crucial aspect of looking after your candle and if you don't it can potentially be a hazard. Trimming your wick will allow for a more even and cleaner burn. It will help prevent your wick from mushrooming or creating soot. If the wick is not trimmed the flame may grow too large and even flicker or smoke which is a sign the flame is not controlled. If you see this happening, extinguish the flame (blow it out) wait for it to cool and then trim the wick. Sandwick Bay candles strive to bring you the best candle we can. But once we send it out to you it still needs to be handled with love and care. I hope this short guide helps you understand how to care for your candle.
